Safety contraventions in deadly CO leak at Saskatchewan seniors home: report

HUMBOLDT, Sask. - Appropriate emergency procedures weren't activated during a carbon monoxide leak that contributed to three deaths at a Saskatchewan seniors home.

That was one of the problems noted in a report by the Labour Ministry into the leak at St. Mary's Villa in Humboldt, east of Saskatoon. The report issued late last month cites six contraventions of Occupational Health and Safety rules.

Premiers say provinces need better health deal to cover costs for seniors’ care

VICTORIA - The premiers are refusing to take no for an answer from Prime Minister Stephen Harper when it comes to improving health transfer payments to the provinces and territories.

Harper said Monday there's no more money for the provinces, but that didn't stop the premiers — who say they've heard the no-money mantra from past prime ministers — lobbying for more negotiations and ultimately more cash.

Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care - Report

The Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care (an ad hoc, all party group of MPs, dedicated to improving care for elderly, dying and vulnerable Canadians) released a report in November 2011 entitled Not to Be Forgotten - Care of Vulnerable Canadians.

The report focuses on palliative and end-of-life care, suicide prevention, elder abuse and a disability perspective on health care and inclusive community living.
